The 15 Peaks Challenge

The 15 Peaks is a route of 26 miles from the top of Snowdon (Wales) to Foel Fras, including some 14,000ft of ascent and fifteen summits. To complete the route within 24 hours walking requires an early start and lots of stamina. This site is going to log our training programme and eventual attempt at the challenge in June 2005. We are a group of guys from St.Barnabas Church, who want to get fit, have some fun and raise some serious cash for a local youth and children's charity. COME ON!

Phew what a scorcher!

Saturday can't come soon enough, even with the warmer weather that's predicted. We had a great time walking the Glyders less than two weeks ago in the clearest conditions any of us had seen there.

Snowdon
We got to Tryfan just after midday and it was rather hot with the midday sun beating down on the rocks, we still had time for a team photo though.

Nice view

As someone else might say "Bring it on!"

Undecided

Still trying to work out whether my ageing body can handle another attempt, had a very good time trying to work that out last weekend though.

The Glyders

We (Trev & Phil) managed to make it from Elidir Fawr to Tryfan, though not without some pain. The climb up to Elidir Fawr was a real slog but worth the effort, just as we reached the ridge the cloud lifted and we could see the whole of Ynys Mon (Anglesea to all you Angles) .

The walk between Glyder Fach and Fawr was pretty unreal, lunar at times.

Tyfan Trev

The descent from Glyder Fach and the climb to Tryfan was the bigest challenge of the day.

Half way up Elidir Fawr

At this stage conditions seemed quite tough, but they got worse. The near white out at the top forced us down after just one mountain not the intended 5, still we learnt alot about the mountains.

Next Week's Hike

Idwal Cottage is booked, sadly no bar at this YHA so we might have to provide our own. The intention is that on Friday we will achieve the middle section of the 15 Peaks which is the 5 mountains Elidr Fawr, Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach and Tryfan. Part of the walk is described here. Let's hope the weather is good.

Best walk in a while

Last Friday was easily the most enjoyable walk I've done in some time, it was only while walking the route that I realised how essential walking the whole route in preparation for the Summer was. Equally valuable (and possibly more painful than the walking aches) was learning who the chief snorers were!

A few more photos from last weeks walk.

A cool view looking down from Y Garn.

Heading to the Hills Again

Well we've been bitten by the bug and are heading to the hills for another training expedition on 14th April. I've booked a room at the Idwal Cottage hostel and we're hoping to complete the second part of the challenge which will cover five peaks ending with Tryfan. Any more takers?

The Challenge Begins

Mike, Phil, Rex and I headed for the hills on Thursday at 4pm. We arrived at a very foggy Pen-y-Pass youth hostel at about 10pm. Fortunately the bar was open and we enjoyed a pint before bunking down for the night. On Friday morning there was mist in the air as we headed up Crib Goch and towards Snowdon. Snowdon via Crib Goch is not for the fainted hearted. After a challenging but enjoyable climb to the summit came the ridge with a sheer drop on one side and a fairly scarey drop on the other. As I crawled along the ridge on all fours very slowly and not very bravely a dog walked past me and gave me a very disdainful sideways look his owner strolled past looking equally condescending. While I still can't work out what they were walking on it did give me greater confidence to get to the other side. We continued on throught the mist to the summit of Snowdon where the view was at it's usual two foot into the mist. We headed down the Llanberis pass did a bit of cross country path finding and then headed back to the hostel. It was a good test of our equipment and various muscles that haven't been used for a while. The day finished with a fine curry in Bangor and a very early night. It was gutting to leave Snowdonia early on Saturday when there wasn't a cloud in the sky and a very good days walking could have taken place. We'll be back soon for another training session, but for a first one it was very good.
